In 1980 Mum had her first grandchild, Sarah, who went on to follow in the footsteps of her mum and grandmother and became a nurse and now a midwife. Something else changed too, she became a new person, she became Granna. For the rest of her life she was known as Granna. Rachel, who is here today, wrote me a lovely note 2 weeks ago. She spoke, I think, for all of Mum’s expanding family. She said that Granna had just welcomed her into the family from the start, ‘There was never any judgment about who I was or wasn’t, no question of whether I was good enough for her grandson. If I was good enough for Daniel , I was good enough for her. “Rachel tried to explain who Granna was to her brother, Jeremy, who was confused about this “enchanting-sounding Granna” of whom Rachel enthused. Rachel replied, ‘Well TECHNICALLY Granna isn’t MY Granna, she is Daniel’s but it’s a testament of my fondness for her that she became Granna to me too.
